Meeting with the Children

I typically have two meetings with children: a joint sibling “get to know you” meeting and a follow-up individual “get to work” meeting. Children are given the option of the second meeting depending on how comfortable, safe and willing they are to participate further after the first. In the first meeting, I explain my role and answer any questions, and establish a working relationship with kids around the issue of family change. The format of this meeting depends on the ages of the children, and I have a playroom and play supplies for younger children. The second meeting is appropriate for school age children, and consists of structured activities to help kids tell the story of how family can work best for them moving forward. Children are aware that I will give feedback on these meetings to both parents. Occasionally a child will ask for a follow up meeting, e.g. to work on a specific issue with parents, and this will occur if parents agree.
